Cancer Wellness & Nutritional Support 2024
The Challenge
Every year, over 20,000 Sri Lankans are diagnosed with cancer, but only 30% receive adequate nutritional support during treatment. Patients at the Apeksha Hospital (Maharagama) and smaller hospices in Kurunegala and Anuradhapura struggle with treatment costs, lack of family caregivers, and poor access to therapeutic foods. Many abandon therapy due to weakness and isolation.
Our Impact
In collaboration with the National Cancer Institute and three hospice centers, we have:
- Provided high-protein, immune-boosting meal packs to 800 active patients, leading to 25% fewer treatment delays.
- Established a weekly emotional support circle and art therapy sessions, serving 450 patients and family members.
- Distributed 2,500 “Chemo Care Kits” (hydration supplements, mouth care items, comfortable clothing) to patients in 10 district hospitals.
- Trained 120 hospice volunteers in palliative communication and pain management.
- Reduced treatment dropout rates by 40% among our enrolled patients through home-based follow-up calls.
