Disability Inclusion & Assistive Technology 2024
The Challenge
Over 1.6 million Sri Lankans live with a disability, yet less than 20% have access to assistive devices or rehabilitation services. In remote districts like Monaragala and Kilinochchi, children with cerebral palsy are unable to attend school due to lack of wheelchairs, and adults with physical disabilities are excluded from livelihood opportunities. Stigma and inaccessible infrastructure worsen poverty.
Our Impact
Working with 25 rural health clinics and 3 special education centers, we have:
- Distributed 350 custom-fitted wheelchairs, 200 walking frames, and 500 hearing aids to individuals in 8 districts.
- Provided physiotherapy and speech therapy sessions (weekly, home-based) to 280 children with neurological conditions.
- Trained 150 family members on safe transfers, home exercises, and pressure sore prevention.
- Launched a “Skills for Dignity” vocational program (sewing, computer basics, artisan crafts) for 120 adults with disabilities; 40 have started earning income.
- Sensitized 15 local government offices on accessibility, resulting in 5 new wheelchair ramps and accessible washrooms.
