Companionship That Healed a Broken Heart
Mr. Sarath, a lonely widower, found new meaning in life through AFT's Elderly Care Program.
Mr. Sarath Perera, 78, lost his wife of 50 years two years ago. After her passing, he withdrew from the world – he stopped attending community events, refused visitors, and his health deteriorated rapidly. His neighbours grew concerned and reached out to AFT.
Our Elderly Care team began visiting him twice a week. We didn’t try to force conversation; we simply sat with him, listened, and shared simple meals. Over time, he started talking about his youth, his career as a teacher, and his beloved wife. We introduced him to mindfulness exercises and gentle chair yoga, which helped ease his chronic back pain.
Within six months, Mr. Sarath became a regular participant at our community centre. He now helps other elderly attendees with reading and writing, and has even started a small gardening project. He says, “AFT didn’t just give me food; they gave me a reason to wake up in the morning.” His smile is now a common sight, and he reminds us that compassion is the most powerful medicine.
