From the Streets to a Future – A Homeless Man’s New Beginning

Sunil had been living on the streets of Kandy for over three years. He lost his job, his family, and eventually his home after a series of unfortunate events. He survived on occasional day‑labour and handouts from strangers. When our outreach team first met him, he was malnourished and deeply depressed.

We didn’t just hand him a meal – we invited him to our temporary shelter, where he received warm food, clean clothes, and medical care. More importantly, we enrolled him in our vocational training programme, where he learned basic carpentry and woodworking.

Within eight months, Sunil completed his training and was placed with a local furniture workshop. He now earns a stable income and has rented a small room. He recently told us, “I had given up on myself, but AFT never gave up on me. They showed me that I still had value.” He continues to stay in touch and often comes to our shelter to share his story with others, proving that recovery is always possible.
